Comfort Zones Aren't All That Comfortable

The origin of the phrase ‘comfort zone’ is a tricky one, mostly because we all have a personal definition and understanding of the term. But when it comes to performance, it’s relatively straightforward: the comfort zone is a behavioral state in which a person operates in an anxiety-neutral condition, using a limited set of behaviors to deliver a steady level of performance, usually without a sense of risk.

Risk is a key word here. When was the last time you took a risk? I don’t mean run over train tracks to beat the train or walk up to a salivating, growling street dog. It could be as uncomplicated as risking embarrassment at a karaoke bar or speaking up at your next business meeting. Stepping out of comfort zones don’t have to be momentous – it is simply a quick nod “yes” instead of the familiar hesitation.

Taking the plunge into unexplored zones can be liberating, enticingly mysterious and full of positive, life-changing encounters. Risk doesn’t end in just failure or embarrassment, it can be a chance for greatness and happiness. We know by now that inspiration appears in many forms. It can even lie in moments of discomfort — look for these opportunities and snatch them! Break free of the limitations you surround yourself with, sleep each night with no regrets and realize control of different situations are easier to maintain with an open perspective.

Comfort zones are self-created. We choose where the lines fall or if they even have to be there at all. Next time you find yourself hesitating, take a moment. You are a wonderful, resilient, capable, courageous individual. Allow that to show in all facets of life and live each day to its fullest!

If you want to try and measure your comfort zone, there’s a website for that. See it here.

How Would You Feel If You Were Unstoppable?

Think about it. To be completely unstoppable. And, no, it’s not impossible. Even with the fact that entrepreneurs face several challenges, becoming unstoppable could be as simple as switching up your habits and redefining old routines.

First, if up until now all you have been doing is talking about becoming an entrepreneur, it’s time to make the talk a reality. All talk and no action does not make you unstoppable. You have to be ready to follow through on what you say and hold yourself accountable. Let’s go ahead and get this out there too – you’ve got to care about your health. Your mind is, without fail, affected by the state of your body. Care about how much sleep you get, the food you eat, the exercise you do and how much water you drink.

With the amount of uncertainty an entrepreneur faces, you have to be willing to embrace risk. Progress is impossible without stepping away from your comfort zone and exploring a variety of options. It’s actually less risky to accept change than to let you or your business become out dated and out of touch. As long as they are calculated, thoughtful risks, you will benefit from them.

Since your day is already complicated enough, try and keep your business plan clear and simple. If you want people to be on board with your idea, then you need to make sure it is easy for everyone to understand. Simplicity and brevity can take you far, so make sure your message is strong and to the point. Afterward, always try to expand your brand identity through authentic, honest marketing. Budget where to spend your money so it has the most impact and brings new consumers to your brand.

Unstoppable people are not super human – they make plenty of mistakes, are constantly rewriting their strategies and they learn more about themselves and their business every day. The fear of whether or not you will succeed will be there no matter what. The true test of an unstoppable person is what they do to put them in a position to test the unstoppable theory.

There’s Still A Long Way To Go, But FranNet’s Stacy Swift Is Dedicated To Helping The Denver Kids, Inc. Organization

At FranNet, we cherish the opportunity to bring the joy of franchise business ownership to entrepreneurs in any stage of life. We love to share our client’s stories through the BE Campaign in hopes that you’ll experience a small part of what FranNet is a part of. Not only is your local consultant dedicated to the success of future franchise owners, you might just find them lending a hand elsewhere too.

Malinda & her little brother Antonio
FranNet of Colorado’s Stacy Swift has over 25 years of small business ownership, management, sales, and marketing experience. Stacy opened her first FranNet office in Denver in 1996 covering Colorado, Wyoming, & Montana. However, when Stacy isn’t working to match clients with their ideal franchise, she spends time with the Denver Kids, Inc. Organization. The main goal of the program is to help kids graduate from high school. In many cases, the child will be the first in his/her family to do so. Kids in the program are primarily from single parent homes and they live close to, if not in, poverty.

“They simply need an outside friend or support person to help them understand that they have hope and that they can grow up to be productive, valuable members of society,” said Stacy. “They can get a solid education to help them become whatever they choose to be in their lives.”
Malinda and Stacy

Stacy first learned of the organization nearly 25 years ago when looking for place to volunteer and give back to the community. Since then, she has served three terms on their Board of Directors, coming in at 9 years total. Currently, she contributes by donating $2,500 per year, a commitment that supports her overall goal of $12,500 in five years. She also spends time as a mentor to a young girl, who was matched with Stacy when she was ten and is now fourteen.

“I felt that I had a very fortunate upbringing, with loving parents, a great family, and a wonderful education,” said Stacy. “I simply wanted to help someone who was less fortunate than I was.”

What never fails to bring a smile (and plenty of laughter) to Stacy and her mentees are the wacky conversations that enrich their time together. She has heard it all, from a mentee stating she was “like a kid who never grew up” to a time when she was in her car and, out of the blue, her mentee said, “Stacy, what’s a hemorrhoid?” Stacy pulled over and had a full discussion about hemorrhoids! “It took everything I had to not crack up,” said Stacy.

The Denver Kids, Inc. organization is able to add more staff and counselors every year, thus serving more kids. Anyone can donate directly to the organization on their website, or they can volunteer to be a mentor! Time donations are just as valuable as monetary donations.

“It has definitely made me more grateful for all that I have.  It had made me realize that, although we aren’t all dealt the same hand in life, we really aren’t any different. Probably most importantly, it’s taught me that money doesn’t buy happiness.  Attitude is so much more important than material things.”

Consider the Legal and Financial Aspects of Owning a Franchise

SavingMoneyAs with any major investment, the best decision can be made only if you’re as informed as possible. You need to spend a good deal of time researching, interviewing and exploring your options -- and a part of the process is determining what the legal and financial aspects are.

As your focus gets more serious with the idea of owning your own franchise, you need to genuinely look at your financials and propose a budget with which you feel comfortable. Research the many options you have, like the Self-Directed 401K option or loans. Financing a franchise may be considered a lower risk investment, mostly because franchises have proven track records and an established trademark and brand. That being said, it is still crucial that you prepare an in-depth business plan and explore a range of options so you commit to the one that makes the most sense for your budget.

The two main documents you must be aware of are the Franchise Disclosure Document (or FDD) and the Franchise Agreement. The FDD provides prospective franchisees with specific information about the franchisor, the franchise system and the agreements that lead to an informed decision. The law requires franchisors to show you the FDD before any franchise is sold. The Franchise Agreement goes into a little different detail than the FDD, specifically on the relationship between the franchisee and the franchisor.

There are various matters that need to be observed in your decision, which is why FranNet suggests you seek the advice of an experienced franchise attorney and financial advisor. They will help you decide the appropriate investigations for any franchise you are interested in and will offer exposure for the legal documentation that will be used to implement the transaction.

Is It Possible To Own A Franchise After Years In The Workforce?

However, you’re the only one who can convince your stubborn, scared self that it’s possible. Spending years in corporate America or working for other small/large businesses doesn’t have to cripple your franchise ownership dreams. In fact, the experience and knowledge you’ve gained to this point will prove to be very useful! At FranNet, we want you to know that it is certainly not time lost – look at it instead as time preparing for this new path.

Think about your current social circle and the activities with which you are involved. Slowly start to transition it all toward your new franchise goals. Look for local franchising events – they will provide opportunities to become acquainted with the right people who will then refer you to the right places, provide you with resources and contacts as well as give valid advice.

Do your research and look for a consultant to guide and help you toward a field that is right for you. See what’s out there and get to know the players. Your current skill set will without a doubt align with a franchise. You may watch online seminars and read several blogs by current franchisees and discover where your budget and needs will fit into the industry.

Keep moving forward. The only guaranteed roadblock that will stand in the way of owning a franchise is you. Don’t continue to sit and wait with the expectation that it will someday change. There is an appropriate amount of due diligence and testing that comes with the process, but ask for help and afterwards go through with it. Can you really own a franchise after years in the workforce? Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! The real question is: where do I sign?

Can You Really "Do It All?" Promises of Productivity.

business touching with statistics graph and data informationsAmber Naslund, the SVP of a social intelligence company has a blog called, “Brass Tack Thinking.” In her post titled, "My Crazy Productivity Secrets” she took on the issue of being productive. Her words provide helpful insights and tips to help manage your time.

What it is that's keeping you from being productive? It could be anything, a loss of focus, lack of motivation, anxiety or even unclear priorities? Most likely, the main thing keeping you from being productive are your choices and using your time wisely.

“My choices reflect what’s important to me, and what makes me happy. That’s fluid and changes to an extent, but I’m devoted to a thriving career, a growing business, and excited about passion projects I have on the side. But there is no magic system. Stop looking for it.” - Amber Naslund.

Let's get it all out there, what do you need to do and what to you want to do. Be honest with yourself! It is easy to blend the two, eventually what you say you need turns out to be what you want. Of course, sometimes they do align. But when finishing a movie or playing with the dog becomes what you need to do, you’ve crossed into procrastination territory and the excuses will overflow.

“I don’t get the “busy as a badge of honor” thing. All that tells me is that you need to learn to manage your time better or get your priorities straight with yourself or the people you work for. Working insane hours is not an achievement.” - Amber Naslund.

At this point you have realized that more hours don’t necessarily equal more work done. If you're dreading the day ahead or constantly daydreaming, perhaps this is a sign you want more. A good way to finish what you need to is by enjoying what you do. “Working insane hours” will happen, but the achievement lies in your dedication to spend that time wisely so you can get back to the things that matter most to you.

“I have the responsibility of kids, animals, a house, and a business. The rest has to come after those things, and even the business can’t take over the other ones. - Amber Naslund.

Remember, your daily routine might look overwhelming but it doesn’t have to dominate every hour of every day. New tasks will always be there to take up room in your schedule. Keep in mind there is only so much you can do in a day and that’s okay! Relax, refocus and cut yourself some slack –work smart and know the difference between what needs to be done today and what can be done tomorrow.

Align Yourself With Strong Franchises

A franchise is a specific license that a franchisee can acquire that in turn allows the owner to have access to the franchisor’s proprietary knowledge, processes and trademarks in order to allow the party to sell a product or provide a service under the business’s name. FranNet’s franchise experts know how to spot the best franchises with these simple giveaways.

If the franchise you are looking at doesn’t have a strong business system or a proven business model, then cross it off your list and move on. What is the difference? A strong business system is how the business operates on a daily basis, such as the payroll, point of sale system, marketing and point-of-sale systems. These items are in direct contact with your consumer. If it isn’t well executed, they will be the first to know and word of mouth can be disastrous (or conversely, highly beneficial). Also, a proven business model is what makes a franchise…a franchise. Franchisees purchase an idea that has shown massive success. They then get training on how to replicate that success (system) to obtain the same outcome. The entrepreneur has the option to choose a business that has been around for years or may be newer, but either choice should have both a strong model and system.

When you find a franchise that is constantly innovating and trying new ideas, keep it on the list. This is a strong sign that they will remain a success through their consistent flow of creativity and openness to keep their business relevant. A business has its staples, however it shouldn’t remain monotonous or its customer base will grow bored and restless. Look for the franchise that has solid staples with an equally solid stream of fresh product or offers.

Befriend other franchisees and seek their wisdom – this will undoubtedly weed out some “maybes” on your list. Ask what they did in their research stage and during their first year, and compare their personality to their ownership responsibilities. Who are you most like? Are they succeeding or is their business struggling? The trick here is to be honest with yourself after the interviews. If you speak with a franchisee that is failing, yet resonates perfectly with your work habits, seriously question your next step. Franchisees in your community could be your future – carefully reflect on that.

Is there such a thing as a perfect franchise? No. If you are seeking perfection, you will not find it. What you can find, however, is a franchise that will embrace all your particular wants and needs and provide you with the future you’ve always wanted.

4 Types of Questions to Ask Franchisees, Before You Become One

You’ve gone through the process of narrowing down the franchise concepts that fit you best. Now it’s time to start the research process.

Before you invest any money, it’s important to carefully and thoroughly perform your due diligence. Make calling and visiting with franchisees part of this process. Franchisees are invaluable resources when it comes to truly understanding how you will fit within a particular franchise.

In other words, you’ll want to speak with at least eight to 10 franchisees in the franchise you are considering. Ask the franchisor which owners have similar backgrounds to you, who the most successful owners are and those who may be struggling. You’ll also want to include a couple franchisees on your call list who are no longer with the franchise and gain more insight into why they left.

By conducting this type of research, you are able to gain a greater perspective of the business you are considering buying. Plus, you’ll have a better idea as to where you might fall on the performance spectrum within that franchise model – top, middle or low performing.

So how should you prepare for these calls? Gather your questions! Here are four types of questions to consider including on your list to get the most out of your conversations:

Getting to Know the Individual
When meeting with a franchisee, the first type of questions you’ll want to ask should be centered on getting to know the individual. Their answers will help you get a better feel for how similar or different from that person you are. And this information may help you predict how you might perform in this same system. Ask questions like:

  • How long have you been in business?
  • What were you doing previously?
  • What made you choose this franchise?

Try to get an idea of how it’s going for them, and in general, if they like what they do.

The Rating Questions
The rating questions are a great way to get a better sense of franchisor provided programs and support. For example, if a franchisee says that the support is great but then rates it a five out of 10, then you know you may want to dig a little deeper into the type and consistency of support provided.

Use the rating-based questions to gather more information on the franchisor-franchisee relationship. And when a rating is exceptionally low or high, take that as an opportunity to ask them to elaborate. Sample questions might include:

  • How would you rate the initial training?
  • How would you rate the ongoing support?
  • How would you rate the marketing programs?
  • What do you like best and least about the business?

Get a Sense of the Numbers
This is your opportunity to get real-life numbers on the annual revenue, expenditures, and revenue breakdowns. Remember how your list of franchisees to contact represented a good cross section of top, middle and low performers in the system? Well, this will give you a good idea of what you could expect in the best and worst of cases should you decide to move forward. Questions you might include on your list are as follows:

  • How do you compensate employees (benefits, paid time off, etc.)?
  • What is your annual revenue expectation for the year?
  • Approximately how much per year do you spend on …?
  • How much could I reasonably expect to gross/net in the first year, second year and third year?
  • What are your costs of goods sold as a percent of sales?

If You Could Only Ask One Question
The answer to this question speaks volumes, “If you had to do it over again, would you?”

Just because a franchisee is considered a “rockstar” in a particular franchise system does not mean that that individual’s answer to this question would be an automatic “yes.” It’s important to remember that a franchise is a small business. It may come with a turnkey business model, but you still have to be prepared to put in the hours and the work. What is the cost/reward ratio, and is that something you would be comfortable with.

Once you’ve completed your calls and visits, and you’ve reviewed your notes, it’s time for a little reflection. Try to determine if you are more similar to the successful owners or if you relate more to those who are struggling. Ultimately, you want to be able to determine if this is something that you could see yourself doing and that you would enjoy doing. The business that is meant for you is one that will help you achieve your goals and vision.

Make Your Business Part Of The Family

We can rely on our families to continuously love and protect each other. A parent’s wisdom has provided generation after generation with sound reason and ample caution through countless decisions and situations. If the idea of hiring your kids or running a family business has been tossed around, stop pitching practices and get in the game.

The dependability, learning experiences, trust, bonding and influence of family values are hard to beat in the business world. If you are considering a family business, you are considering the opportunity to come together and build a supportive environment. Around 35 percent of Fortune 500 companies are family-controlled and represent the full spectrum of American companies from small business to major corporations. Furthermore, family businesses make up 62 percent of the country’s employment. The workday can evolve into a more comfortable place and, with boundaries that separate the professional from personal, after hours can offer security and contentment for everyone.

The IFA’s Educational Foundation’s research shows that over 900,000 franchised businesses provide 21 million jobs and contribute $2.3 trillion to the U.S. private sector economy. With such a variety, many families turn to franchising to grow their brand without the hassle of building a business from the ground up. Brands like Campbell, Ford and even Wal-Mart got its start as family business. They grew to be multi-million dollar companies and left a powerful legacy.

Stop tossing around ideas and get answers! FranNet is waiting to help guide your family to the right business. With 27 years of consulting experience, we’ll help get you closer to your ideal lifestyle. Of the tens of thousands of franchisees that we help get started, about one in four have involved people who wanted to run a family business or hire their children. FranNet has helped around 100 family businesses get off the ground every year.

Entering into a family-run franchise takes some planning. And even if you can address the basic concerns, there are some issues you probably haven't even considered. Tutoring Franchise Athena Learning Centers Adds In-Home Franchise Opportunities

FranchiseWorks.com | Tutoring Franchise Athena Learning Centers Adds In-Home Franchise Opportunities to Traditional Retail Storefront Model.
PRINCETON, N.J. - Athena Learning Centers of Princeton, New Jersey, today introduced an In-Home brand model to potential franchisees that would enable them to offer K-12 one-to-one tutoring in math, reading, writing and science, as well as SAT and ACT college test preparation support in students' homes or other mutually agreed upon locations. This complements the company's traditional retail storefront franchise option, offering a lower-cost of entry to join the Athena Learning Centers network and a means to service smaller markets where the population would not support a retail storefront.

Athena Learning Centers franchises are a community of year-round Learning Centers that offer K-12 students innovative solutions for improving their math and reading skills in preparation for success in college and the 21st century workplace. Athena's after-school program curriculum is directly aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The company currently has franchises established in New Jersey, Texas and Florida, and plans to open 20 more in 2014.

"Our decision to create Athena Learning Centers as a franchisor was fueled by our passion to help children and improve their lives through education," said Mark Mele, CEO, Athena Learning Centers. "We seek franchisees who share our commitment and realize that some will not have the resources or potential customer base to support a retail location.  Our In-Home franchise option, along with our original retail storefront model, opens the door for virtually any qualified educator or entrepreneur to join our team and integrate our proven framework for success."

In-Home Brand Option: New Way to Integrate The Athena Advantage SM

By owning the Athena Learning Centers In-Home brand in their market, franchisees leverage all of the operational expertise and products of a traditional Athena Learning Center with an estimated initial investment of $45,000. (The investment for a retail storefront franchise is approximately $125,000.) Owners can either be certified teachers or employers with a staff of certified teachers that provide ... Jake's Wayback Burgers Franchise Owner Receives Small Business Excellence Award

FranchiseWorks.com | Burger Franchise Owner Receives Small Business Excellence Award - Watertown Franchisee of Jake’s Wayback Burgers Franchise Nets Small Business Excellence Award.

By Ted Booker - Watertown Daily Times | April 28, 2014 - WATERTOWN - Joseph A. Biccum, franchisee of Jake’s Wayback Burgers in Watertown, will receive the Small Business Excellence Award on May 5 at the 16th annual awards luncheon at the DoubleTree Hotel in Syracuse hosted by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Nominated by Watertown Savings Bank, Mr. Biccum was selected for the award based on successful sales after opening the restaurant in 2013 at Salmon Run Mall. First-year sales at the restaurant exceeded $750,000, according to a news release.

Mr. Biccum, who plans to open five new franchise locations in the Northeast over the next five years, gave credit to the restaurant’s staff for the award.

“My employees and managers are overjoyed to receive this award,” Mr. Biccum said in a statement. “Everyone worked extremely hard to reach our goal, and to actually exceed it is a phenomenal accomplishment. We all look forward to continuing down this successful path.”

Giving back to the community is also a priority for Mr. Biccum. In a twist on the Thanksgiving tradition, Jake’s Wayback Burgers donated 100 of its Turkey Dinner burgers to the Salvation Army soup kitchen on State Street.

To open the Watertown restaurant, Mr. Biccum received matching loans of $40,000 from the Jefferson County Industrial Development Agency and North Country Alliance. It also secured a loan of about $133,000 from Watertown Savings Bank.
