"It is never too late to be what you might have been."

It’s almost like George Eliot was speaking straight to the late blooming entrepreneurs. Most of us reach a certain age and feel it’s too late to start chasing old fantasies and begin again. The wonderful thing about success is its impromptu character – it could happen at anytime time in life for the wildest of reasons.

Dig a little into Ray Kroc, Leo Goodwin and John Pemberton’s past and you’ll be convinced that an empire can be built with a little gray hair and spirit! Several of history’s leaders did not begin with the companies they are known for today and the same can be said for many modern entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship is never easy, no matter what stage of life you are in. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication, yet the reward is leading a career you have control over and enjoy.

As author Isabel Allende says in her TED talk, “society defines when we are old.” How true! Does your age have control over your ambition, passions and mission in life? How accurate it is to see years as chapters, while the story you have been living is full of detail and depth. There are so many pages left that can be equally thrilling and satisfying.

The safety your current career offers you is a huge reason to stay put and avoid change. You have safety in that job you’ve carried out for 20 years, in the routine you walk through each day and in the predictable road ahead. There is nothing wrong with valuing that safety or the life you’ve lived thus far.  But what about that desire for more? It has not aged at all.

Your age is the equivalent of a fine, aged wine: highly valued, greatly enjoyed and rare. You also have something younger counterparts do not – money and the experience to manage it. Not only that, but you will know how to cater to your community and gather support from long-time neighbors.  Don’t be afraid to use your network and build a team you can trust. Start exploring and don’t be afraid to ask current franchisees for advice.

You are not bound by any one path. Remember that you are the main influencing factor for what happens in your life. If becoming your own boss was a goal 10, 20 or even 30 years ago, it can still happen.

Be Honest About How You Dodge The Truth

What triggers a person to lie? There are those we tell ourselves, those to get ahead, white lies, broken promises, exaggeration, deceptions, compulsive lying -- there are several ways to go about it. In Bella DePaulo’s Ph.D. research, she found people lie during one in five of their daily interactions. Pamela Meyer, author of Liespotting, says in her TED Talk that we’re lied to about 10 to 200 times a day! This leads us to wonder: how honest is our world?

As Meyer goes on to say in her TED talk, lying is a complex feature that is woven into the fabric of our history and our modern lives. She describes several indicators that unravel deception and arms people with the tools needed to spot lies. Lying in any form is serious, not just for our personal lives. Lying can be one of the main causes for the failure of your small business and why you aren’t living your ideal future.

How familiar does this sound: “it's too late to change direction now.” You’ve spent several years in a career you hate and the idea of change seems impossible – you’re convinced it’s too late. This is a lie! There isn’t a time of life that serves as an imaginary cut off point, age doesn't play a role in accomplishing your goals. What you do with your future is not permanently set in stone. If you want change in your life, go for it!

Your business needs to remain credible, and lying will never fail to ruin that. Stay credible by following through with your promises and remaining authentic. It’s okay for your goals to be reasonably aggressive, but when you're making a commitment make sure you do what you say you're going to do. Also, try to lay off the exaggeration. Stay honest and the customers will take notice, stretch the truth and the customers will see that too. 92% of consumers believe recommendations from friends and family over all forms of advertising: make sure what they say about you is good.

“I hate my job now, but I will be happy as soon as I [get the promotion/finish the project/collect my bonus/etc.]” Which is it? Small fixes are temporary boosters when it comes to feeling fulfilled, but you have to think long-term. Maybe this means starting your own business, or changing your businesses company culture or pursuing your true passions. Don’t wait for something you hate to suddenly get better, only you can remake your situation.

Question your narrative, discover what lies you tell yourself or to others. The truth will certainly lead to a more fulfilling, positive outcome. Find security in your authenticity -- honesty is the path to a happier, healthier you.

Five Must Ask Questions Before Investing in a Franchise

There are so many opportunities in franchising that it’s tough to know which ones are worth further investigating and which ones may not be a good fit for your personal and financial goals.  Before you sign anything with a franchisor, here are five questions you must ask (and answer) yourself.
When potential candidates begin talking with franchise systems, they tend to ask pretty standard questions: How much money can I make? How much will I have to spend? How big can I get? Is the franchise territory exclusive? But the deeper you go in your research, the more pointed and detailed the questions get, and they’re critical for a franchisee candidate to ask before signing the franchise agreement.
What does your first-year support look like?
Most good franchise systems, understanding how important the first year of franchise ownership is and how likely a new owner is to struggle, provide extra support and coaching. It could mean the home office assuming all responsibility for marketing, or using customer service reps in a call center to schedule jobs while the franchise owner concentrates on executing the baseline work.
There are all kinds of ways of offering support. But it’s important for any franchisee to know what kind of help they’ll be getting at a time when they’ll really need it.
What are the most common problem areas for franchise owners in your system, and how do you help solve them?
The test of a good franchise system isn’t how well it works when business is going strong. It’s how it helps its franchise owners when they struggle. Even the smartest and hardest-working business owners in rock-solid systems run into challenges every now and then.
When that happens, the franchisor’s operations staff should be prepared to help the owner respond to the problem effectively. In the best systems, they’ve seen and can anticipate many of the pitfalls the business may face.
What kind of insurance should I have?
Don’t overlook this. Some businesses even require certain types of insurance (this would be addressed in the franchisor’s Franchise Disclosure Document).  It’s important to be protected in case of accident or natural disaster, and you need to make sure you’re including the ongoing expense in your business plan.
What kind of ongoing training is available?
Smart franchise systems understand that their franchisees need to keep their skills honed, and franchisees in the system need to stay up-to-date on best practices. Ongoing training opportunities are great for a secondary reason: they send the message that the franchisor cares enough about its franchise owners to give them the tools to succeed.
What’s the relationship among franchisees like?
A culture of cooperation among franchise owners can make the difference between success and failure, and good franchise systems go out of their way to foster good will. Incentives help: franchisors can single out especially helpful veteran franchise owners in internal communications, or they can give monthly “helping hand” awards for the franchisee who most helped first-year owners.
Going into business for yourself requires careful consideration and due diligence – and it’s not a decision to be taken lightly.  But it can be the most rewarding things you can do for your career.  FranchiseWorks.com features some of the best franchises in their respective industry and is a great introduction to those brands.

Top Five Things to Consider when Choosing to Start a Cleaning Business

Top Five Things to Consider when Choosing to Start a Cleaning Business.

In an uncertain economic environment where finding a job, much less a career, can be both strenuous and stressful - many smart and savvy working professionals are yearning for the opportunity to be their own boss. While opening a small business can have tremendous personal and financial rewards, it is often viewed as a risky endeavor based on the liability assumed by individual ownership.

However, The commercial cleaning industry presents the perfect solution; an opportunity to own and operate your own franchise, be your own boss, and excel in a recession-proof industry with little to no specialized experience or education necessary. Find a company that has the experience and expertise needed to help you start a cleaning business, but before you get started there are a few important things to consider.

1. Is this the right business for me?
Commercial cleaning services are a $100 billion dollar industry projected to grow by more than 5% in the next three years alone. Owning a franchise that is part of a great structured franchisor program is a great way to stay profitable in a time of economic uncertainty; with low overheads, consistent demand, and high opportunities for growth. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that a professional cleaning specialist will be the fastest growing occupation in the next ten years, reaffirming the potential expansion of the industry and related professions.

2. Franchise management vs. independent ownership?
Owning an independent business and owning an established franchise are both viable ways to start a cleaning business; however franchise ownership offers considerable advantages that help foster long-term success. Franchise owners benefit from the company’s reputation and reliability, along with their growing base of satisfied customers. Many of the best franchisors support franchisees by offering operational training, business development coaching, marketing support, technical support, and industry/technology trend information all without having to take on the high collateral and liability associated with independent ownership.

3. Residential vs. Commercial cleaning services?
When choosing to start a cleaning business, the two most common choices are residential or commercial cleaning services. Both have key advantages; residential cleaning is usually less expensive to start, but commercial cleaning has a greater opportunity for profit and success. Owning and managing a franchise allows you to bypass the high start-up costs of creating a business from scratch while reaping the benefits of operating behind a well-established brand with solid industry connections. The commercial sector includes large-scale projects, janitorial cleaning, and a much wider range of cleaning services than the consumer sector, making it an advantageous alternative for those looking to start a cleaning business.

4. Who is the target market?
While the potential benefits of commercial cleaning services are unrivaled, the task of securing customers within this market may seem daunting to those first getting started. Good franchisors will be there to help with a foundation built upon a history of top-level service. Owning a franchise under an established brand opens your business to a network of industry partners who trust and rely on the continued professionalism of franchisees. Office buildings, retail stores, healthcare facilities, stadiums, and manufacturing plants are all great examples of commercial businesses included in your potential target market.

5. What services will be provided?
There are a variety of services that commercial cleaning businesses provide and it is important to decide which areas to focus on before getting started. Floor care services, such as carpet cleaning, are exceedingly popular for commercial clients as well as exterior services such as window washing. Many franchisees specialize in scheduled maintenance cleaning for their regular customers as well. Solidifying your area of expertise will allow you to gain greater clout in the industry and further establish your brand image as a highly regarded franchise owner.

You don’t have to be an expert – an understanding of these five aspects combined with an entrepreneurial drive and dedication to success are all that’s required to start a cleaning business. To learn more about franchise ownership and how to start a cleaning business, check out some of the top franchises in the game today by going to www.franchiseworks.com.

Franchise Trade Show News, 2013 International Franchise Expo Biggest In Event's History

FranchiseWorks.com | Franchise Trade Show News: 2013 International Franchise Expo Was The Biggest In Event's History. Nearly 20,000 visitors, more than 400 exhibitors flock to NYC for Franchise Expo.

Paramus, N.J. – July 2012 – Hosted in New York City for the second year in a row, the 2013 International Franchise Expo (IFE) marks the biggest in the event’s 22-year history. From June 20-22, nearly 20,000 visitors from more than 90 countries explored 413 franchise exhibitors at the Javits Center – from well-established name brands to emerging, fast-growing concepts. The success of this year’s IFE, put on by MFV Expositions, is further proof that franchising plays a significant role in the recovering economy.

As a testament to the industry, this year’s expo kicked off with a breakfast announcing the findings of the inaugural ADP National Franchise Report, created in collaboration with Moody’s Analytics to identify trends and insight into the sector’s impact on the labor market. The report shows private-sector franchise jobs increasing by 19,160 during the month of May, with restaurants, food retailers and business services showing the largest increases. Approximately 150,000 jobs were added over the past twelve months through the franchising industry.

“The ADP report was the perfect start to this year’s expo as it helped solidify franchising’s position as an essential driver of small business and the U.S. economy,” said Tom Portesy, president and CEO of MFV Expositions. “This was further evidenced by the quality of attending potential franchise owners as more than 30 percent planned to invest between $100,000 - $500,000 in a new franchise business.”

More than 50 industries were represented at the expo, including everything from restaurant and education to health care and children’s services, representing North American-based companies looking to expand abroad as well as international brands looking to enter the U.S. market.

“As a first-time exhibitor and a relative newcomer to franchising, we weren’t sure what to expect,” said Scott Nelowet, founder of Florida-based French Fry Heaven. “We were thoroughly impressed not only with the sheer volume of foot traffic, but of the variety and quality of prospects we met. We spoke with people from all over the world who had a genuine interest in our simple French-fry-only concept. It’s hard to put a price on the kind of value you get from an event like the IFE.”

Attendees learned best practices from industry experts who hosted educational symposium geared toward every stage of the journey. Among these opportunities, one of the best attended was the International Symposium which included 13 symposia and seminars on essential topics from how to begin franchising internationally to how to choose the right markets. In addition, the IFE hosted a Private Equity and Finance Conference of four in-depth sessions led by the industry’s key players who shared insights on the state of financing in franchising and how private equity affects a franchise brand.

Attention from media organizations was high too, giving exhibitors opportunities to get their brands in front of consumers and investors beyond the show floor. FOX & Friends, CNNMoney, TheStreet.com, The Wall Street Journal, Telemundo, The New York Post, Entrepreneur Magazine, WPIX-TV, Black Enterprise Magazine, Associated Press, and CBS Evening News were just some of the news organizations interested in exhibitors.

Next year’s IFE will be held June 19-21, 2014 at the Javits Center.  For more information, please visit http://www.ifeinfo.com.

It's no surprise that franchising accounts for a large part of the recovering American economy, contributing significantly to two critical elements - job creation and GDP – and outperforming the economy as a whole in 2012. According to the International Franchise Association’s (IFA) 2013 economic outlook, franchising is projected to add more than 10,000 franchise establishments, account for nearly 8.3 million jobs by the end of 2013 and contribute a GDP of $472 billion.

“Mirroring this steady growth is the increasing number of franchisors participating in trade shows to strategically grow their system,” said Jim Mastandrea, Group Show Director of MFV Expositions. “The IFE also draws qualified attendees ranging from recent college grads to retirees looking to get back in the business world.  The expo truly covers all ends of the spectrum – from out-of-the-box, niche franchises to well-known, global brands.  Attendees are sure to find a concept that fits their interests and lifestyle.”

Industry experts will host educational symposium geared toward every stage of the journey. Offering more than 70 free seminars along with nine in-depth symposia, the IFE offers a wealth of knowledge into the franchise industry. With more than 90 countries represented from around the world and more than 150 U.S. Embassies through their Foreign Commercial Service Offices actively promoting the IFE within their regions, the IFE has been a significant catalyst to the global expansion of franchising.

Why Should I Attend The International Franchise Expo (IFE) June 20-22 In New York

Why Should I Attend The International Franchise Expo (IFE) June 20-22 In New York?

A recent report found that franchise businesses will continue to grow at a slightly faster rate than other businesses in terms of job creation, new business formation, economic output and GDP contribution according to IFA’s first quarter update to The Economic Outlook for Franchise Businesses report prepared by IHS Global Insight for the IFA Educational Foundation. The report shows franchising remains an incredibly strong and resilient business model that generates jobs and economic growth for the American economy.

With that being said, thousands of entrepreneurs and business owners will flock to the largest franchise expo in the country to meet over 400 franchised businesses from every industry. The 22nd Annual International Franchise Expo (IFE), the franchise industry’s premier annual event sponsored by International Franchise Association, is a three-day show taking place June on 20-22 at the Javits Center in New York City. At the franchise trade show, the top restaurant franchise brands and current franchisees have the rare opportunity to meet face-to-face with one another.
